SHAWMUT BANK OFFICES WILL OPEN FOR REGULAR BUSINESS ON NEW YEAR'S EVE

HARTFORD, Conn., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Shawmut Bank Connecticut announced today that all of its offices in Connecticut will be open for regular business on Dec. 31, New Year's Eve.
Eileen S. Kraus, president of Shawmut Bank Connecticut, said, "Businesses and consumers spoke, and we listened. Many of our customers said that they need to make year-end transactions and funds transfers for accounting and tax reasons and would like the convenience of having the last day of the year to do it. For that reason, Shawmut has decided that all 118 of our Connecticut branches will be open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on New Year's Eve."
Recently, State Banking Commissioner Ralph M. Shulansky responded to these same concerns, giving Connecticut banks the option of staying open on New Year's Day, a designated bank holiday in the state. Only six states, including Connecticut, designate Dec. 31 as a bank holiday.
Shawmut branches in Massachusetts and Rhode Island also will be open for business as usual that day.
Shawmut Bank Connecticut, the state's largest bank, is a unit of Shawmut National Corporation (NYSE: SNC), a $27 billion bank holding company with dual headquarters in Hartford and Boston.
