SHARP ELECTRONICS CORP. ANNOUNCES 64K BY 18-BIT STATIC RAM WITH LOW NOISE, 20-35 NANOSECOND ACCESS TIME

CAMAS, Wash., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Sharp Electronics Corp. announced today the LH521028, 64K by 18-bit wide static RAM (SRAM) for parallel processing systems, video applications, workstations and other graphics or memory-intensive applications. Sharp's LH521028 represents an improvement over existing wide-word SRAMs by reducing noise, lowering chip count, and simplifying circuitry in complex systems.
The LH521028 suppresses ground bounce and other noise problems associated with fast, wide-word memory parts via six ground pins and six power pins distributed around its 52-pin PLCC package.
In addition, the LH521028 incorporates transparent address latches to reduce the number of supporting IC components. Eliminating separate latching ICs also saves three nanoseconds in access time and helps improve overall system performance.
The LH521028's 18-bit wide architecture saves board space by having a single wide-word part take the place of two to four 8- or 9-bit memories. The new SRAM flexibly operates in bus architectures with 8 bits, 9 bits, 16 bits or 18 bits. In addition, the LH521028 can operate in parallel where 24 bits, 32 bits, 36 bits or more are required. The 64K depth and fast access time make it ideal for use in cache memory and video frame buffer applications.
The fast, efficient design was achieved with Sharp's proven 0.8 micron CMOS process. The LH521028 has a CMOS periphery and a polysilicon load memory cell matrix. Output levels are TTL compatible.
"We're committed to be the preferred supplier of SRAMs," said Al Kalish, SRAM product manager at Sharp Microelectronics Group. "Being the first to market with a CMOS 20 ns 1 Meg SRAM and opening our new $800M IC fab in Fukuyama, Japan, prove our commitment," he added. The LH521028 is fabricated in Fukuyama and second sourced by at least two other memory vendors.
