VALLEJO, Calif., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Marine World Africa USA is introducing some delightful new animals on May 23. Let's see... There are requiem sharks, the family of tropical superpredators aptly named for a funeral service, sandtiger sharks, which cannibalize on their siblings, and nurse sharks that, when provoked, will bite, shake and hold on to their antagonist, even in death, until their jaws are pried apart.
 Bring the kids.
Actually, you would probably be hard pressed to keep the kids away from Shark Experience, Marine World's new state-of-the-art environment for tropical sharks and other fish of the spectacular oceanic outer reef. The $5.5 million underwater attraction is the largest new addition ever built at the wildlife park.
Visitors are pulled into the depths of the 300,000 gallon habitat on a moving walkway through a clear acrylic tunnel. Instantly, they are immersed in deep blue water, becoming gradually surrounded by sharks that glide toward them from out of the shadows and swim past just inches over their heads. To the right, brightly colored reef fish slip into crevices when a shark cruises by. On the left, a shelf of coral, sand and rock abruptly drops away into the deep.
This spectacular transitional zone in the ocean, where the outer reef ends and the open sea begins, is where large patrolling sharks suddenly appear out of the blue abyss. Shark Experience recreates this dramatic undersea habitat and captures the heart-pounding thrill of diving there. It is undoubtedly as close as most people will ever get to these cold-eyed predators and their beautiful but dangerous realm.
In all, Shark Experience showcases 15 different species of sharks and rays, over 100 species of tropical fish and 20,000 pieces of artificial coral. The population totals 60 sharks and 1,400 bony fish.
One-half of Shark Experience is devoted to a Discovery Gallery of educational exhibits, including interactive learning stations that showcase shark biology, reproduction, distribution, sensory capabilities and even worldwide maneater attack sites.
Shark Experience is free with admission to Marine World Africa USA. Admission is $21.95 for adults, $15.95 for children ages 4-12 and free for tots age 3 and under. The senior discount price is $18.95 for those age 60 and over.
