TO FOCUS ELECTION NIGHT ATTENTION ON HUNGER RELIEF
WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Share Our Strength (SOS), one of the nation's largest private, nonprofit sources of funds for hunger relief, will become more visible than ever on Tuesday, Nov. 3, with an Election Night television blitz timed to coincide with viewers' heightened concern for domestic issues such as hunger. American Express, national sponsor of Share Our Strength's 1992 and 1993 Taste of the Nation events, is providing the funding.
The 60 second testimonial spot, created by Ogilvy & Mather, New York, will air twice between 8:00 and 11:00 p.m. on NBC network television, and twice each on the CBS and ABC affiliates in the top 15 spot markets. The ad includes a toll-free number -- 1-800-251-7000 -- for viewers who want to donate funds or support Share Our Strength.
The television ad features Danny Meyer, owner of New York's Union Square Cafe. Meyer, who has long been active in raising money for hunger relief, served as the New York chairman of SOS Taste of the Nation events in 1991 and 1992, and lead the country in total funds raised in 1992. He is also responsible for mobilizing hundreds of other top restaurateurs and chefs for the cause.
The television spot contrasts New York's Urban setting, with scenes of soup kitchens and hungry people, with the interior of Meyer's Union Square Cafe. Meyer says in the ad: "I think that over 10 percent of the U.S. population goes to bed hungry, and that's something that's hard to imagine. At my restaurant, like a lot of restaurants, we have extra food ... And it's just a totally logical connection that we, who often have leftover food, would want to address this problem of hunger.
"The most effective way is through an organization ... called Share Our Strength ... Because American Express has provided the funding ... their dollars are actually going to connect food with someone who needs it."
"This national exposure is critical to Share Our Strength's efforts to increase public awareness of the hunger problem at a time when the need is greater than ever," said Bill Shore, executive director of Share Our Strength (SOS). "By taking SOS's message to a national audience, American Express is expanding the efforts of the thousands of foodservice professionals engaged in SOS's fight to end hunger. This advertising support will maximize SOS's impact and enlist thousands more across the country to join our hunger relief efforts."
Patricia Duffy, vice president of restaurant marketing, American Express Travel Related Services Company, Inc. said: "Thousands of restaurateurs and chefs across the country are involved with SOS because it gives them the chance to take their love of feeding others and give something back to the hungry in their community. In our ongoing support for the restaurant industry and the issues most important to it, we have developed a strong and very fulfilling partnership with SOS and the restaurateurs who fight against hunger."
Share Our Strength -- organizer of the annual "Taste of the Nation" fundraiser involving as many as 4,000 chefs in 100 tasting events across the country -- is a nationwide network of food industry and other creative professionals using their skills and resources to raise funds and awareness for hunger relief. Since its founding in 1984, SOS has granted more than $7.5 million to over 200 domestic and international hunger relief agencies.
