 SHAFFER DIVISION OF VARCO INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT
 ORANGE, Calif., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- George I. Boyadjieff, president and chief executive officer of Varco International Inc. (NYSE: VRC), announced that Mark A. Merit has been named the president of the new Shaffer Division of Varco International Inc. located in Houston. Merit succeeds Gus Schultz, who has resigned to accept a partnership position with a local firm.
 Merit started at Varco in 1980 as a programmer analyst and has held several progressive positions as: manager of MIS, controller - Varco Electronics Division and manager of Engineering Software Development for the current Drilling Systems Division. While in this position, he also managed the Pipe Handling Machine (PHM) development program. He also spent a year in Scotland as operations manager of Varco U.K.; and most recently, Merit has been vice president of Manufacturing for Drilling Systems while also assuming the activities of Division Controller.
 Merit holds a master's and bachelor's degree in business administration and computer science, respectively, from the University of California at Irvine.
 Merit will be relocating to Houston with his wife, Beth, and three young children, Kathleen, Jennifer and John.
