SGI REPORTS POSITIVE CLEAN COAL TESTING RESULTS
 FOR TWO THAILAND COALS
LA JOLLA, Calif., July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- SGI International (NASDAQ: SGII) announced today positive results from its testing and evaluation of two Thailand coals. The results have been reviewed with senior officials in Thailand and SGI is now proceeding to the next phase of its Clean Coal Refinery Development Program for Thailand. Coal is being supplied to SGI's Development Center in Ohio from Thailand's largest coal mine and electric power generating complex.
Thailand coals are predominately lignite and subbituminous with proven reserves of more than 2 billion metric tons. These reserves potentially can supply several Clean Coal Refineries. Currently, Thailand generates 26 percent of its electricity from coal. This is expected to rise to 47 percent by the year 2000 and 67 percent by 2006. Current installed electrical capacity is 10,700 megawatts with an increase to 25,500 megawatts planned by 2006 to keep up with Thailand's rapidly expanding economy, which grew an average of 10.5 percent per annum during 1987-1991. This was twice the anticipated annual growth rate and is the economic underpinning for acceleration of SGI's Clean Coal Refinery Project Development Programs in Thailand.
SGI International is a developer of new energy technologies, with its corporate headquarters at 1200 Prospect St., Suite 325, La Jolla, CA 92037.
