SEX DOCTOR: I'm 38..and got spots.
Dear Dr Cath
I'M 38 and still plagued by spots. I used to get acne on my face as a teenager but it cleared up when I hit 20. Then three years ago I started getting zits again, only this time on my back.
I feel ridiculous having spots at my age and it's stopping me from wanting to meet men and have sex.
I APPRECIATE your dilemma. At 38 you might expect to have got over acne, but many still suffer from it in their 20s and 30s.
Acne occurs when excess grease and dead skin cells block the pores which can then get infected with bacteria. It's not due to poor hygiene, and isn't infectious.
Acne can return in adult life due to a hormone imbalance.A high level of androgen hormones can make the skin more sticky and pores more likely to be clogged.
Ask for a blood test at your surgery to check your hormones are in balance.
