SEX ABUSE VICTIM DEMANDS INQUIRY.

Byline: By ANN MOONEY

A MAN sexually abused for years while in the care of a religious order yesterday demanded a public inquiry into his case.

John Barrett was abused by sex pervert Brother Ambrose from the age of seven to 15 at the Brothers of Charity complex in Lota, Co Cork, in the 1950s and 1960s.

His call follows revelations that gardai are now investigating 10 more claims of child sexual abuse in Lota.

Ambrose, 80, real name James Kelly, received a record 36-year prison sentence for sexually abusing John and a number of other children in Lota in 1999.

This was the biggest sentence ever imposed by a judge for sex offences in the history of the state.

But Ambrose was released in 2002 after serving just three years. He is now believed to be living in Scotland under the care of a religious community.

Mr Barrett who is chairman of the Right of Place victim support group in Wexford, said yesterday he would ask the Commission on Child Abuse to hold a public hearing into his case when he appears before it on July 21.

He added: "My proposal will give the Commission an opportunity to start holding hearings in public."
