SEVENTH PRODUCTION C-17 DELIVERED TO USAF, FLOWN TO CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C.

LONG BEACH, Calif., Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The seventh production C-17 transport and the second to join an operational unit was delivered on schedule to the U.S. Air Force today at McDonnell Douglas' facilities here where the versatile new airlifter is built.
The C-17 Globemaster III departed for Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., to join the USAF's 437th Airlift Wing, which will field the first operational squadron of 12 C-17s. The unit is expected to be operational in early 1995.
Keys to the C-17 were accepted by Brigadier General Tom Mikolajcik, commander of the 437th Airlift Wing, from David O. Swain, McDonnell Douglas' senior vice president and C-17 program manager. Mikolajcik piloted the new airlifter, joined by Air Force pilots Lieutenant Colonel Giles Gentry and Major Joe Niemeyer for the flight to Charleston.
The newest C-17 made its first flight on July 28, logging 7.2 hours -- the longest maiden flight of any of the eight airlifters delivered to the Air Force. The seventh production C-17, called P-7 is the first aircraft to be delivered of the Lot III production "buy" of four C-17s funded in fiscal year 1990. The previous six production aircraft, P-1 through P-6, plus the first flight test aircraft, T-1, were part of the initial fixed-price development and production contract.
The first C-17 to be delivered to the operational Air Force unit arrived at Charleston Air Force Base on June 14. It was the sixth production aircraft and is being used to train aircrews and maintenance and logistics crews. It has logged 54 flying hours since arriving at the Air Mobility Command base.
Six aircraft -- T-1, P-1, P-2, P-3, P-4 and P-5 -- are participating in the flight test program at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. As of today, they have flown 512 missions for a total of 1,885 flying hours.
