SETTLEMENTS REACHED WITH ALL PARTIES IN SONOCO PATENT INFRINGEMENT CASE

 HARTSVILLE, S.C., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Sonoco Products Company (NASDAQ-NMS: SONO) announced today that settlements have now been reached with all parties in a two-year-old patent infringement case involving its QUIKMATE(R) plastic bag system.
 In July 1990, Sonoco initiated litigation in the Third U.S. District Court, Jacksonville, Fla., charging a number of manufacturers and distributors with patent infringement. The patent involves a plastic bag loading system including T-shirt style bags with holes in the handles and a bag rack with horizontal rods that provide support. The system is widely used by retailers and supermarkets.
 Settlements have now been reached with all the parties involved including Vanguard, Bunzl USA, Duro, Trinity and Mobil. Terms of the settlements were not released.
 Hartsville-based Sonoco Products Company is an international manufacturer of packaging products with more than 250 operations in 22 countries employing 16,000 persons. The company's High Density Film Products Division is one of the largest U.S. producers of plastic bags and bagging systems for supermarkets and retailers.
