SET YOUR VCRS: A MUST-TAPE APPEARANCE OF THE WHO ON 'THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR' AIRS MONDAY, JAN. 11, 8 P.M. ET/PT ON E!

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- A now-famous appearance by The Who makes the Monday, Jan. 11, episode of "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" a must-tape for rock music lovers. "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" airs Monday through Friday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on E! Entertainment Television.
The Who perform their hit "My Generation," concluding with the guitar-smashing finish that was later to become The Who's signature. According to an anecdote offered by Tom Smothers on Monday's show, the explosives loaded into the bass drum did not have much of an effect during rehearsal, so drummer Keith Moon tripled the quantity. The ensuing explosion was not only spectacular, it has been called the likely cause of guitarist Pete Townsend's partial hearing loss.
Legend has it that the explosion even startled guest star Bette Davis, who was watching in the wings, says Smothers. However, he goes on to dispel a popular rumor: "Anyone who knows Bette knows she didn't faint."
