SERVICE MERCHANDISE BUILDS ITS NEW YORK EMPIRE
WITH THE ACQUISITION OF 2 DAHLKEMPER'S STORES
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Raymond Zimmerman, Chairman of the Board of Service Merchandise Company, Inc., (NYSE: SME) announced today the acquisition of two Dahlkemper's stores in Buffalo, New York. The stores located at 4220 Maple Road and 3540 McKinley Parkway will close for business today, Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1992, and will re-open as Service Merchandise stores on Saturday, Nov. 21, 1992. When open, the two new stores will carry over 10,000 name brand items currently featured in the 1992-93 Service Merchandise Jewelry and General Merchandise catalog. The 50,000 square foot stores will be Service Merchandise's first and second in the Buffalo market place. Each location will expand its staff to employ approximately 125-150 full and part time associates. As part of the deal, Service Merchandise will not take over Dahlkemper's Walden Galleria Mall jewelry and gift store.
"In 1973, we opened our first store in New York, and the market has continued to show remarkable growth with an additional 20 stores being opened. The two Buffalo stores will allow Service Merchandise to expand its operation in a prime area," said Raymond Zimmerman. The number of Service Merchandise stores in the state of New York ranks third in the chain exceeded only by the states of Florida and Texas. He added that the stores' locations will certainly attract new customers as well as provide Dahlkemper's customers with a fresh approach to shopping in the Buffalo retail market.
As America's Leading Jeweler, the two stores will offer an extensive array of fine jewelry and jewelry services including on-site jewelry repair. Each store will offer the most up to date selection of gold jewelry, diamond jewelry, precious and semi-precious stones, watches, pens and fragrances. Service Merchandise also offers the broadest selection of name brand products in categories of home furnishings, electronics, luggage, cameras, sporting goods, toys and juvenile products.
"It's not by accident that Service is our first name," said Zimmerman. "Friendly customer service is and will always be our number one goal." Examples of the many customer service features include: Nationwide Gift Registry -- a computerized registry system that instantly updates an individual's registry nationwide; Silent Sam -- a user friendly computer allowing customers to verify item availability and place an order; Service Plus -- an extended warranty program; Phone From Home -- orders will be waiting for immediate pick-up; Mail Order -- for home delivery; and gift certificates.
Service Merchandise operates 368 stores in 37 states. Currently there are 24,000 Service Merchandise associates employed across the country. The company reported sales in excess of $3.39 billion in 1991.
