SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL RICE MONTH

 SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL RICE MONTH
HOUSTON, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- September 1992 marks the second

annual National Rice Month celebration. Proclaimed in joint resolution by both Houses of Congress, September 1991 was the first official salute to U.S. rice farmers and the entire rice industry. President George Bush endorsed the observance with a proclamation "calling upon the people of the nation to observe September with appropriate ceremonies."
U.S. consumers are recognizing rice in a big way. Consumption of rice is now an estimated 20.5 pounds per capita, and climbing. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, annual rice consumption has virtually doubled since 1979. Consumption increased almost 65 percent from 1980 to 1990.
Concern for good health is a solid reason for growth in rice consumption. Consumers want to eat foods they feel are good for them. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Guide Pyramid has done much to illustrate and support what nutritionists and other health professionals have been telling consumers in recent years.
According to The Pyramid, the largest portion of our diet should come from the group at its base: Rice, bread, cereal, and pasta; grain- based foods. The U.S.D.A. recommends six to 11 servings per day from this group.
Complex carbohydrate foods like rice, bread and other grain-based foods are an important source of energy and are low in calories and free of fat, sodium and cholesterol.
Ease of preparation may be another reason for America's increased consumption of rice. A natural convenience food, regular white rice takes only 15 minutes to prepare. And there are a wide variety of rice products that are very convenient, such as seasoned rice mixes, frozen foods, quick-cooking rices, and more.
As part of National Rice Month, the USA Rice Council is offering a free brochure entitled "The New Food Pyramid" which is filled with easy- to-prepare recipes, nutrition information and tips on preparing rice.
