SEPTA TO CONDUCT PUBLIC HEARINGS BEGINNING AUG. 31
ON REGIONAL RAIL DIVISION SERVICE REDUCTIONS
PHILADELPHIA, July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- SEPTA will hold four public hearings beginning Aug. 31 on its proposal to reduce Railroad Division operating costs by an estimated $2.8 million during the current fiscal year in order to meet the requirements of the Authority's Fiscal Year 1993 Operating Budget, SEPTA announced today.
The proposal would primarily affect weekend service but there would also be some changes to weekday peak and off-peak services. In addition, SEPTA would discontinue service to four stations: Logan, Mogees, Andalusia and Frankford Junction.
The hearings are scheduled as follows:
For Bucks County on Monday, Aug. 31, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Bucks County Court House (Main and Court Streets), Doylestown
For Chester and Delaware Counties on Tuesday, Sept. 1, beginning at 9 a.m. in the West Chester Area Senior Center (355 W. Market St.), West Chester
For Montgomery County on Tuesday, Sept. 1, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Valley Forge Hilton (251 DeKalb Pike), King of Prussia
For Philadelphia on Wednesday, Sept. 2, beginning at 11 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. in the Philadelphia Hilton (Broad and Locust streets)
SEPTA said that copies of the proposed tariff will be available for public inspection beginning Aug. 10 or shortly thereafter in the Office of the Secretary of the Board on the 3rd floor of 714 Market St., Philadelphia, and also at the various public libraries listed below.
On weekends, the following Railroad Division services would be discontinued:
-- Route R2 Warminster service on Sundays
-- Route R5 service between Paoli and Downingtown on Saturdays
-- Route R5 service between Lansdale and Doylestown on Saturdays and Sundays
-- Route R6 Norristown service on Saturdays and Sundays
-- Route R7 Chestnut Hill East service on Saturdays and Sundays
-- Route R8 Fox Chase service on Saturdays and Sundays
There would also be reductions in the hours of service on a number of lines.
On weekdays, the following services would be discontinued:
-- Route R5 service beyond Downingtown
-- Route R6 Cynwyd off-peak service (The shuttle bus service which replaces Cynwyd trains on Saturdays would also be discontinued)
Also on weekdays, peak period schedules would be altered by "combining" trains. On a number of lines, two consecutive trains, currently operating at separate times, would be combined into one train, but with extra cars to maintain passenger carrying capacity.
The libraries that will have copies of the proposed tariff for inspection beginning Aug. 10 are: Bucks County Free Library, Doylestown; Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Library, Bristol; Chester County Library, Exton; Springfield Township Library, Springfield; Media-Upper Providence Free Library, Media; Sellers Memorial Library, Upper Darby; Norristown Public Library, Norristown; Ludington Library, Bryn Mawr; Upper Moreland Free Public Library, Willow Grove; the Free Library of Philadelphia Central Library on Logan Square, and the Free Library of Philadelphia's West Philadelphia, Northeast and Northwest Regional Branches.
SEPTA said that persons who are unable to attend a public hearing can mail their written remarks to the Secretary of the SEPTA Board, 714 Market Street, Philadelphia, Pa., 19106.
