SEPTA ATTACKS SPECIAL DANGER OF TRACK-CROSSING
BY FERN ROCK TRANSPORTATION CENTER TRESPASSERS
PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- After several days of warning by SEPTA Police on the scene, and through leaflets distributed to trespassers, the Authority today issued citations to 32 persons who crossed the railroad tracks illegally and placed themselves in extreme danger at the new Fern Rock Transportation Center, SEPTA announced.
SEPTA Police Chief Ronald Sharpe said the effort will continue for the foreseeable future and expressed hope that today's enforcement of the law will deter others from taking a dangerous shortcut across the tracks.
"SEPTA has put up fences which have been cut through, and then cut through again after they were repaired," Sharpe said. "This determination to risk life and limb required the action we have taken. But most importantly, we see each citation as an opportunity to help someone rather than to penalize."
SEPTA said Fern Rock presents a special hazard today which will soon change as the Authority's RailWorks project prepares to shut down rail service between Wayne Junction and Center City this spring.
Today the new Fern Rock Transportation Center is not yet open and is situated between two other stations, SEPTA explained. Instead of stopping at the transportation center, trains pass through from both directions at scheduled speeds, presenting a danger to anyone on or near the tracks.
SEPTA said it is particularly concerned about trespassing at this location due to the impending RailWorks project and the major changes in train and passenger traffic it will cause.
SEPTA reported that all of the persons who received citations for trespassing today were apparently crossing the tracks as a shortcut to SEPTA's Broad Street Line at the subway's Fern Rock Station.
