SEPT 11, 2001: WAR ON THE WORLD: ONE STEP FROM ARMAGEDDON.

Byline: BRIAN READE

IN New Testament times stood a town called Armageddon, 18 miles south-west of Haifa, in what was then Palestine.

In St John XVI came a prophesy that here would unfold the final battle between the forces of good and evil. A battle which would destroy the world.

For centuries man took small steps towards that apocalyptic date. Yesterday may just have marked mankind's giant leap.

As our hearts go out to an America turned upside down by these unbearably bestial attacks, our brains should also go out to future attacks already being planned in what's left of The Pentagon, to devastate untold innocent lives.

In 1941, after the initial shock of the bombing of Pearl Harbor America unleashed what it called "a terrible rage" on its enemies. Yet what might happen in the months ahead could match the devastation seen even in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

At first I could not comprehend the scenes which appeared on my telly. We had watched America for all of our lives through a lens. It always gets attacked by baddies. New York always gets invaded by aliens. But Uncle Sam always comes out on top.

The plot is always in America's control. But not in yesterday's matinee.

The last time such panic-filled the streets of America was November 1938, when Orson Wells broadcast a dramatisation of War Of The Worlds, and breathless reporters told of Martians advancing towards New York.

A year later the world was thrown into an insane war. All we can do today is pray for some sanity.
