SENIOR ROCKHOUNDS, FANS OF GEMS DISPLAY CREATIONS.

Byline: BETTIE RENCORET SENIOR COLUMNIST

LANCASTER - Talented artisans and rock hounds of the Palmdale Gem and Mineral Club put together a spectacular display recently at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds.

They showed what they could do to transform stones and minerals into one-of-a-kind items of beauty.

``We get real pleasure in taking a raw piece and working it into a beautiful finished product. If someone sees what we do and wants it, that doubles the pleasure. It gives us a sense of real value, of time and effort well spent,'' said club member Russ Lass. ``If we can give children something different to encourage them to expand their horizons, so much the better.''

Lass creates jewelry from semiprecious stones he picks up on rock-hunting field trips and from other sources. His wife Lorna crafts colorful Southwestern Indian-style pots

Another husband and wife team is David Walblom and Susan Chaisson-Walblom. David sculpts and Susan makes jewelry, mostly from silver.

Silversmith Dean Westman of Mojave put together several pieces while people watched him work at a table set up in the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds' Poppy Pavilion.

Westman is a member of the Gem and Mineral Club of Antelope Valley, not the hosting Palmdale group. He has attended the Geological Institute of America in Carlsbad.

Menus for the week at the senior life nutrition sites in Lancaster and Palmdale have been announced. All meals include bread, margarine and coffee, tea or milk, for the suggested donation of $2.

Monday: Beef Stroganoff, noodles, peas and carrots, lettuce and tomato salad, pears in juice.

Tuesday: Mandarin chicken salad, marinated beets, pea salad, ice cream.

Wednesday: Salisbury steak, brown rice, Normandy vegetables, tossed salad, banana.

Thursday: Barbecued pork sandwich, macaroni salad, corn, carrot-raisin salad, peaches.

Friday: Beef enchilada casserole, Spanish rice, green beans, coleslaw, cheesecake.
