SENATORS DIAZ-BALART AND WEXLER INTRODUCE FARM WORKER ACCESS BILL
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Senators Lincoln Diaz- Balart (R-Miami) and Robert Wexler (D-West Palm Beach) have introduced legislation that would guarantee full access to agricultural labor camps throughout the state.
The Diaz-Balart/Wexler bill is similar to one which passed in the Senate last session but was unsuccessful in the House.
The bill "would prevent labor camp operators from imposing advance notice requirements to visit workers, while preserving the workers' rights to privacy in their dormitories," Wexler said.
"We have worked to find a reasonable compromise that will protect the rights of the workers, the camp operators and social service agencies," he said.
Diaz-Balart said the bill has the backing of groups that were previously thought to oppose it. "A few corporate entities, such as Flo-Sun Incorporated, for example, have been very helpful on this issue, along with Florida Rural Legal Services, Karen Woodall and other workers' rights advocates," he said.
