 SEMI-TRUCK THAT TURNS INTO BUILDING
LEAVES SALVATION ARMY FACILITY FOR FLORIDA IN HOURS
DETROIT, Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- A UAW-GM 18-wheel tractor-trailer that opens up into 850 square feet of space, will leave for the South from The Salvation Army's Adult Rehabilitation Center at 1627 W. Fort St. around 5 p.m. today.
The truck will be packed with donations for victims of Hurricane Andrew, and is going to a Salvation Army warehouse in Hialeah, Fla. Once it is unpacked, the best use for the truck will be determined.
General Motors has three such mobile exhibition centers. The one that will be used was scheduled to be in Detroit and was available for use.
"It's very satisfying to see so many Americans lending a hand to help the people of South Florida," said UAW Vice President Stephen P. Yokich and GM Vice President Gerald A. Knechtel. "We're just doing our part and hope we can further assist in the best and most appropriate manner."
"This vehicle will be of great use to the disaster relief effort in South Florida, and we thank the UAW and General Motors for making it available to us," said Lt. Col. Clarence W. Harvey, Eastern Michigan Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army.
The UAW and General Motors have already provided The Salvation Army with three other 18-wheel tractor-trailer trucks to deliver food and other supplies to assist in the relief efforts in the South. All three were packed and departed for the South earlier this week.
