SELF TEAMS WITH ESTEE LAUDER FOR BREAST CANCER CAMPAIGN

/ADVANCE/NEW YORK, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- During October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Self Magazine and Estee Lauder USA will distribute over 1-1/2 million pink lapel ribbons, a symbol of breast cancer concern, along with hundreds of thousands of informational booklets on the disease.
The ribbons and booklets will be distributed at Lauder cosmetics counters at over 2,000 retail locations nationwide beginning Oct. 1. Materials will also be distributed at scores of restaurants and at major fundraising events around the country.
The eight-page booklet, titled "Self Magazine's Breast Cancer Handbook," is part of a special section from the October issue. It covers a broad range of topics from how to get a good mammogram to figuring out one's risk of developing the disease.
"Breast cancer is relentless in its devastation. This disease demands our attention and energy," said Alexandra Penney, editor-in- chief of Self. "This campaign has been created to remind women of the importance of early detection and treatment of the disease. It is also a public mobilization geared to secure adequate research funds from the government, along with universal access to breast cancer screening and care for all women."
She noted that one-in-nine women will be stricken with the disease at some point in their lives -- and an estimated 46,000 will die of breast cancer this year.
For the second consecutive year, Self has joined with Estee Lauder in a national campaign for breast cancer awareness. Last October, Self conceived and initiated the pink ribbon concept. Over 700,000 ribbons were distributed last year along with a petition urging Presidential action in fighting the disease. Some 200,000 signatures were presented to Hillary Rodham Clinton at the White House in May by Mrs. Penney and Evelyn Lauder, senior corporate vice president of Estee Lauder, Inc.
Since the introduction of the pink ribbon last year, it has become a universal symbol of breast cancer awareness and has been adopted by numerous groups and countless individuals.
