SELECT Software Tools announces SELECT Component Manager to support Microsoft's Component Information Model.

SANTA ANA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 27, 1996--

SELECT's product offering is broadened to support Web-based

Component Management

SELECT Software Tools (NASDAQ:SLCTY), a leading vendor of component-based modeling tools for multi-tier client/server development on Wednesday announced the SELECT Component Manager, an addition to the SELECT Enterprise product line designed to support the management and re-use of software components via the Web and organizational networks.

SELECT's announcement has been welcomed by both users and analysts worldwide.

The SELECT Component Manager enables components held in a repository, either locally or at a remote Web site to be stored, browsed and registered for re-use. It extends the functionality of a repository, making it more powerful and easier for developers to use.

The development of the SELECT Component Manager follows SELECT's work on the Component Information Model, previewed in a recent design review for the Microsoft Repository.

A key element of the open Microsoft repository, the Component Information Model offers a standard for the way both low level software components and high level business components can be described and held within a repository.

According to Microsoft, developers will use the Component Information Model to create inter-operable components, facilitating component-based development and re-use. This initiative will provide a standard for the emerging consumer/supplier component industry.

The SELECT Component Manager will operate in conjunction with the Microsoft Repository and the Softlab ENABLER Repository. The SELECT Component Manager is designed to be used inter-operably with a variety of third-party tools. A prototype of the product was demonstrated in conjunction with Texas Instrument's Arranger at the Microsoft repository design review.

John Kopcke, chief technology officer of Softlab said of the announcement, "The new SELECT Component Manager will give developers further flexibility to handle Web and network based components and will provide excellent cataloging and browsing facilities for the ENABLER repository."

As well as facilitating the re-use of components within an organization, the SELECT Component Manager will enable commercial component builders to make their components available via the Internet. It will provide facilities to make use of the Web marketplace easier, by allowing users to register interest in a catalog of components (e.g. a set of ActiveX controls from a third-party component supplier), and receive regular notification of changes and upgrades.

Melinda Balou, senior analyst at the Meta group commented on the future of components, "By 1998/99, our research shows Global 2000 organizations will increasingly adopt component-based development -- whether hybrid, or pure OO -- and will seek analysis and design paradigms which will enable them to leverage line-of-business expertise as well as emerging classes of business objects, ActiveX controls, Netscape plug-ins and Java applets by 1999/2000."

Stuart Frost, founder and chief executive officer of SELECT Software Tools said, "New repository technology such as the Microsoft repository and Softlab's ENABLER is making component re-use within an organization an achievable goal. The SELECT Component Manager extends this capability by taking advantage of the Web to make it possible for software developers to access and re-use components on a global scale."
