SEITEL INCREASING ITS 3D SEISMIC EXPANSION

SEITEL INCREASING ITS 3D SEISMIC EXPANSION
HOUSTON, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Seitel, Inc. (NYSE: SEI,

SEI.RA/SEI.F), said that at the annual convention of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, which begins this coming Sunday in New Orleans, it will discuss the company's increasing expansion plans in the three-dimensional (3D) seismic field.
Seitel said that, in addition to having completed shooting its first 3D seismic survey earlier this month, it has commenced its second 3D program.
These two surveys, the first in Louisiana and the second in south Texas, are believed to be the only 3D seismic programs being done today on a "group-shoot" basis in the U.S. Gulf Coast, whereby the multimillion- dollar costs of each are being underwritten by several leading oil and gas producers, Seitel said.
Seitel, moreover, is planning to conduct "at least four to five 3D group-shoots in 1993, and increasingly more in following years," stated Paul A. Frame, president and CEO.
In addition to revenues from creating the surveys, Seitel retains survey ownership and sells additional licenses to the data. (Seismic surveys are copyrighted material and license to use the data can not be transferred from one party to another.)
 In-House Vs. Out-Sourcing
To meet the increasing number of proprietary 3D surveys that Seitel is planning to conduct, the company said it its considering the formation of a specialized field-acquisition team equipped to handle 3D shooting in the difficult marsh environment of the Louisiana-Texas Gulf Coast, where Seitel is concentrating today.
"We want to use state-of-the-art 3D seismic recording technology and equipment, and the most talented field technicians and crew in the industry. We are analyzing if it would more cost- and quality-efficient to form an in-house equipment and crew team or to continue to subcontract for these resources," said Frame. He added that Seitel might consider forming a field operation in a joint-venture partnership with another geophysical company.
"The bottom line is to ensure that Seitel is best able to meet the burgeoning demand for 3D seismic," Frame stated.
 Projected Seismic Growth
The worldwide seismic field today is approaching a $3 billion annual market, which is projected to more than double by 1995 year-end to over $6 billion, according to industry analysts. The growth is expected to be fueled primarily by the increasing use of 3D surveys as well as more sophisticated computer analysis of both 2D and 3D data.
 Seitel's Onshore Focus
"Our goal is for Seitel to be the leading resource for 3D seismic data onshore the United States. We are focusing onshore because that is more difficult to do than offshore 3D surveys, and Seitel specializes in doing the most demanding seismic data creation," stated Frame.
3D seismic surveys produce a more detailed depiction of the Earth's subsurface than 2D data. Both 2D and 3D seismic surveys are being used increasingly in the exploration and development of crude oil and natural gas reserves, because the geophysical information provided significantly increases drilling success and reduces finding costs.
Seitel both creates high-quality 2D and 3D seismic surveys and markets from its data base. In total, the amount of seismic information that the company has available to market today is approaching one million miles, one of the largest U.S. seismic data bases.
