            National Consumer Survey Indicates Nintendo
Has Lost Its Number No. 1 Ranking
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Only retail sales numbers on Dec. 26 will know for sure whether Sega of America's Genesis and Game Gear systems will usurp long time rival Nintendo this Christmas season as the most popular video game system. But if results from SEGA World Tour '91 are any indication, Nintendo will soon need to adopt the "We Try Harder" motto.
Final cumulative results from the 25 city SEGA World Tour and its national video game survey placed Sega Genesis with Sonic the Hedgehog with 88.84 percent of the vote over Nintendo's Super NES with Super Mario World (11.16 percent). Sega's Game Gear was also favored with 91.79 percent over Nintendo's Game Boy (8.21 percent). The national survey, which concluded on Nov. 3, challenged more than 26,000 kids to playtest both systems.
The SEGA World Tour kicked off on Sept. 13 and attracted nearly 120,000 parents and children during its nine week campaign. Cities visited by the tour included Baltimore, Dallas, Seattle, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, San Francisco, San Jose, Philadelphia, Detroit, New York, Cleveland, Boston, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Chicago and Minneapolis. In addition to the video game playtest, the SEGA World Tour showcased demonstrations of the world's first 3-D holographic arcade game, Time Traveler; non-stop action at the Sega Family Challenge; and guest appearances by radio personalities and the life-size Sonic the Hedgehog.
"Demand for Sega Genesis is up 400 percent over last year," stated Tom Kalinske, president of Sega of America Inc. "These tour results indicate that the core video game audience -- kids 8 to 14 years -- are the reason for this increase. We're pleased that when presented side by side with Nintendo, Sega systems are favored by a ratio of almost 9 to 1."
Sega of America Inc. is the wholly owned subsidiary of Sega Enterprises LTD/Japan, an international marketer and distributor of a broad line of arcade and entertainment systems.
