SECRETARY OF ENERGY JAMES D. WATKINS ISSUES STATEMENT
WASHINGTON, March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement by

Secretary of Energy James D. Watkins in response to the House Energy and Commerce Committee completion of its markup of H.R. 776, the Comprehensive National Energy Policy Act, which was reported out of the committee by a vote of 42-1:
"I would like to commend and congratulate the House Energy and Commerce Committee for their expeditious consideration of this important legislation. Chairman John Dingell (D-Mich.), Ranking Member Norm Lent (R-N.Y.), Subcommittee Chairman Phil Sharp (D-Ind.) and Subcommittee Ranking Member Carlos Moorhead (R-Calif.) exercised real leadership in producing a comprehensive energy bill that will help to implement the President's National Energy Strategy.
"The momentum generated by the committee's decisive action on this legislation should help ensure timely House action on comprehensive energy legislation.
"While the department supports much of H.R. 776, a number of areas require additional attention. We will be working closely with the Energy and Commerce Committee, and with other House committees in the coming weeks to secure prompt House passage of a balanced, comprehensive energy bill."
