SECRETARY OF ENERGY JAMES D. WATKINS COMMENTS
 ON SUPER COLLIDER FUNDING DECISION
WASHINGTON, D.C., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement by Secretary of Energy James D. Watkins after the Senate today voted 62-32 to table an amendment that would have stripped funding for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) in fiscal year 1993:
"I am pleased that the Senate has voted by an overwhelming margin to continue funding for the super collider in FY 1993. The super collider represents an important investment in the scientific, technological and educational future of this nation. The super collider is also providing substantial economic benefits today. The SSC laboratory has awarded over 20,000 contracts to businesses of all sizes in 48 states and over 100 universities in 36 states are involved in SSC research.
"We look forward to the conference where the president and I will fight for the Senate position on funding for the super collider."
