SECRETARY OF ENERGY ISSUES STATEMENT REGARDING RESEARCH EFFORTS

BY THE LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY, OTHER INSTITUTIONS
WASHINGTON, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was issued by Secretary of Energy James D. Watkins at a press conference to announce the discovery by the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory researchers and four other institutions of the genetic defect that causes the most common form of muscular dystrophy. (The research at the laboratory's Human Genome Center is part of the Human Genome Initiative, a worldwide research effort with the goal of analyzing the structure of human DNA and determining the location of the estimated 100,000 genes. In the United States, the DOE and the National Institutes of Health carry out the human genome program.)
Today's announcement is a reminder that the DOE labs are truly an asset to the nation. Their research extends well beyond weapons work to a vast array of world-class research from the most basic to the most applied. Today's discovery, with all its implications for a possible future treatment of this disease, is one of the first fruits of the human genome project, but it is only the beginning. There will be more discoveries to come and they will come at an ever faster pace. This finding is an example of how very basic research at the molecular level can hold true promise for improving the health of millions.
