 SECRETARY CARD LAUNCHES TRANSPORTATION WEEK,
 DOT ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
WASHINGTON, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Secretary of Transportation Andrew H. Card Jr. today kicked off the U.S. Department of Transportation's 25th anniversary celebration and this year's National Transportation Week with a salute to the people who serve America's transportation needs.
"For the past quarter-century, the Department of Transportation has worked hand-in-hand with private industry and state and local governments to improve the safety and efficiency of our nation's transportation system," Card said. "During this special week we recognize the contributions of the 10 million workers in private industry and 100,000 DOT employees who keep our country moving."
The highlight of the week's festivities will be a May 12 anniversary celebration on the national mall featuring Card and several former DOT secretaries. The event will also include exhibits by DOT agencies, private companies and other organizations illustrating advances in technology, safety and service across all modes of transportation.
The week's activities will include a May 13 conference at the National Academy of Sciences on future transportation challenges and creative solutions to meet them. A "video-wall" exhibit depicting transportation in action will be on display at Washington's Union Station May 11-18.
