SECOND HIGHEST DAILY TRADING DAY IN AMEX HISTORY BOOSTS ANNUAL VOLUME OVER 3.6 BILLION SHARE MARK, AN EXCHANGE RECORD

NEW YORK, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Year-to-date equity trading volume at the American Stock Exchange topped 3.6 billion shares today, setting a new annual record at the Exchange. The previous yearly record was set in 1992 when 3,595,789,405 shares traded.
The new mark was set as the Amex traded approximately 43 million shares today, the second highest daily turnover in Exchange history. The previous single day high was 43,432,760 shares, set on Oct. 20, 1987, the day after the Market Crash that year.
Amex Vice Chairman Joel L. Lovett observed that "interest in mid size stocks has been building all year. With our index hitting a new high today for the 43rd time this year, the volume is a convincing demonstration of this interest."
