SEATTLE-KING COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH: E COLI AT NORTHGATE SIZZLER

SEATTLE, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Northgate Sizzler at 550 NE Northgate Way, remains closed today but may be allowed to reopen tomorrow, the Seattle-King County Department of Public Health announced today.
Ten cases of E Coli 0157:H7 have now been confirmed in people who ate at the restaurant. The 10th case, which has just been confirmed, involved a 38-year-old Snohomish County woman who ate at the Northgate Sizzler on Aug. 17. Of the 10 cases, three are children -- two boys and a girl.
An 11th "probable" case of E Coli occurred in an 87-year-old King County woman who ate at the restaurant on Aug. 17.
The Health Department is scheduling a
reinspection of the Northgate Sizzler for
 Saturday, Sept. 4, at 9 a.m.
It appears the outbreak was confined to the period between Aug. 14 and 18. Prior to any reopening there will be another inspection and Sizzler will be required to have all new food products. The inspection will focus on the salad bar preparation and display.
All of those who were ill ate at the salad bar. The Department of Public Health is doing further investigation of three foods which have shown a strong association with proven E Coli cases. The people who had confirmed illness ate one or more of the following foods: lettuce, ranch dressing, or shredded cheese.
The Department is continuing to look at cases of diarrheal illness in patrons who ate at the restaurant and they are reviewing their lab results.
The E Coli hotline number is 206-296-4949.
