SEATTLE SITE OF REGIONAL AMERICA 2000 LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Educators, community organizers and business and civic leaders from a five-state area are expected to attend a regional AMERICA 2000 leadership conference in Seattle tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb. 12) to discuss how they can help their communities adopt the AMERICA 2000 strategy to achieve the National Education Goals.
Representatives from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington will attend the one-day conference, which is being sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education's Region X office in Seattle. (Region X includes Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.)
The conference will begin at 9:15 a.m. Leslye A. Arsht, director of communications and counselor to U.S. Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander, will give the keynote speech at 9:30 a.m.
Conference sessions will focus on how communities can adopt the National Education Goals, organize local AMERICA 2000 strategies, create report cards on their schools and plan for New American Schools. Also, representatives from OREGON 2000 and ALASKA 2000 will discuss what states can do to help create AMERICA 2000 communities.
All sessions will be held in the North Auditorium of the Jackson Federal Office Building, 915 Second Ave., Seattle.
AMERICA 2000 is the national strategy aimed at achieving the six National Education Goals. It calls on governors, state and local officials, educators, parents and business leaders to create and support local AMERICA 2000 efforts.
Since last April, when President Bush announced the strategy, 32 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa and more than 1,000 communities have adopted AMERICA 2000.
