SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER'S FASSIO WINS WORLD CITIZEN AWARD
SEATTLE, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The World Affairs Council of Seattle has chosen Virgil Fassio, publisher of the Seattle Post- Intelligencer (P-I) to receive its 1992 World Citizen Award, the organization's highest annual award, the P-I announced today.
Fassio, who joined the Post-Intelligencer as vice president and general manager in 1976 and became publisher in 1978, was honored for his contribution to understanding of world affairs and for his support of the region's international organizations, the council said.
Specifically, the council cited his leadership in "increasing the availability of reliable information about international affairs" and in "communicating the region's perspective to international visitors."
Fassio, a board member of more than a dozen civic groups, is currently chairman of the Washington Council on International Trade and an advisory board member of the World Affairs Council. He is a former chairman of both the Seattle-King County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Seattle Downtown Association.
He has traveled extensively in about 45 countries, he said, and has met or interviewed a host of world leaders, including Egyptian ruler Gamal Abdel Nasser, Indian Premier Jawaharlal Nehru, the Shah of Iran and Nationalist Chinese Ruler Chiang Kai-shek.
Past winners of the Seattle Council's World Citizen Award include Helen Jackson, widow of the late U.S. Sen. Henry M. (Scoop) Jackson and chairwoman of the foundation that bears his name; and Bob Walsh, president of Seattle's Goodwill Games Organizing Committee.
Last year's winner was Dr. George E. Taylor, the founder of the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington.
