FREDERICK, Md., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Sears is nearing completion of the expansion and renovation of its store at Frederick's Francis Scott Key Mall, including a 20,000-square-foot addition that will bring the store's sales floor to more than 71,000 square feet.
The project is part of a five-year, $4 billion capital expenditure plan Sears announced earlier this year, in which the retailer will upgrade and re-merchandise 500 stores over the next three years. The Frederick store, opened in 1978, is among 135 stores Sears has scheduled for renovation this year. The project is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
Changes at the Frederick store include a new emphasis on apparel merchandising. The renovation will result in a 9,000-square-foot expansion and relocation of the women's apparel department, which will greet customers at the mall entrance. This 55 percent increase in space devoted to women's apparel also will allow an expanded assortment as well as updated displays for petite women's apparel and the Mainframe shop's junior apparel.
The men's apparel department will be significantly enlarged, to more than 9,000 square feet. Space dedicated to family footwear also will increase. The store also will offer customers a significantly expanded Home Center, featuring a wide range of hardware and home improvement merchandise.
Sears apparel and family footwear departments offer both private label and national brand merchandise. "Sears has a great apparel story to tell," said Leslie Wendorf, manager of the Frederick store. "This expansion and renovation will give us the ability not only to display our expanded merchandise assortments more attractively, but also to make shopping a more pleasant experience for our customers," she added. Features of the renovation which will make the Frederick store a more comfortable and convenient place to shop include wider aisles, softer lighting, new carpeting and new merchandise display fixtures.
In "The Women's Store," Sears features activewear, sportswear, intimate apparel, career and casual clothing, social occasion dressing, shoes and accessories. "The Men's Store" offers national brands in sportswear, activewear, furnishings and outerwear. These include Arrow, Lee, Levi's, Dockers, Body Glove, Cotler, Farah, John Weitz and Munsingwear. Family footwear departments offer customers popular national brands such as Converse, Florsheim, Keds, L.A. Gear, Reebok and Wolverine along with Sears Trader Bay, I Luv Comfort, Main Frame, Apostrophe and DieHard private label brands.
The expanded, remodeled Frederick store will offer customers a Home, Office and Travel shop, a new format for Sears. The shop will include an assortment of lifestyle merchandise including bed and bath fashions, housewares and home textiles, luggage, picture frames and photo albums.
The store's popular Kids & More department, a complete children's store, will be relocated to the center of the store. The department offers a full line of children's apparel from sizes 0 to 20, infant furniture and accessories, and FunTronics shops featuring Sega and Nintendo games. Kids & More customers can choose among national brands such as Levi's, Lee, Dockers, OshKosh B'Gosh, Bugle Boy, Maverick by Wrangler, Reebok, and Sears franchise brands including Freeze Frame, MaxActive and Toughskins.
