 SEARS REPORTS MAY REVENUES
CHICAGO, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Sears Merchandise Group today

reported that total domestic store sales for the four weeks ended May 30 were $1.71 billion, 1.1 percent above the same period last year. Comparable domestic store sales were 0.3 percent higher for the period.
Sales increases occurred in major appliances, home office equipment, and furniture, continuing the trend started in January and indicating improving confidence in the economic recovery as consumers undertake major purchases.
However, weather adversely affected sales in the reporting period as unseasonably cool and dry weather contributed to large sales declines in seasonal products, such as lawn and garden equipment and air conditioners and some apparel lines.
Sears today is completing the initial roll-out of its Homelife furniture format in the Chicago market with the opening of a new 25,000- square foot store in Orland Park, Ill. It is Sears ninth Homelife store in the Chicago area. Sears currently has 65 Homelife stores nationwide, with 17 more planned for the remainder of the year.
Gross revenues for the reporting period were $2.47 billion, 0.7 percent below last year, and reflect planned lower catalog revenues as Sears Catalog pursues a more focused and more profitable direct marketing strategy.
For the 17 weeks ended May 30, Sears Merchandise Group reported gross revenues of $10.15 billion, 0.2 percent above the $10.13 billion in the same period of 1991.
