 SEARS REPORTS DECEMBER SALES
CHICAGO, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Sears Merchandise Group today

reported that gross revenues for the four weeks ended Dec. 28 were 2.0 percent below last year. Gross revenues for the period were $3,314,134,626, compared with $3,892,968,282 last year. Comparable store sales were down 1.8 percent.
Conforming with the industry reporting schedule, Sears December sales results cover the four weeks from Dec. 1 through Dec. 28. Sales for the two days after Thanksgiving were included in Sears' last sales reporting period.
Edward A. Brennan, chairman and chief executive officer of Sears, Roebuck and Co., said that sales in Sears domestic retail stores were down 0.6 percent in December, but were up 3.6 percent for the two-month holiday shopping season compared with last year.
Brennan said that sales for the holiday season started strong after Thanksgiving, but weakened considerably through most of December. "Sales surged the weekend before Christmas and continued to be exceptionally strong through New Year's Day."
He said that traffic was strong in Sears stores throughout the holidays and transactions in November were up over last year. In the last 10 days of December, shoppers responded favorably to value-oriented merchandise.
Sales for the reporting period were led by women's sportswear, infant and toddler apparel, athletic footwear, exercise equipment, and bed and bath textiles. Brennan said overall sales results continued to be tempered by consumer reluctance to purchase big-ticket durables.
More Than $425,000 Raised for Charity
"We are especially pleased with customer response to our holiday promotion in conjunction with the first televised showing of the movie 'E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial' and the rollout of a new marketing and customer service campaign titled 'You Can Count On Me,' " Brennan said.
He noted that the in-store photo promotion involving "E.T." has raised more than $425,000 to date for two charities -- the Special Olympics and Children's Action Network. The in-store photo promotion ends tomorrow. Sears sold nearly 500,000 "E.T." videotapes.
For the 47 weeks ended Dec. 28, Sears Merchandise Group reported gross revenues of $30,915,435,950, 1.5 percent below $31,374,434,173 in the same period of 1990.
