SEARS REPORTS APRIL REVENUES

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Sears Merchandise Group said its total domestic store sales from continuing operations for the four weeks ended May 1 were $1.65 billion, 6.0 percent above restated sales of $1.56 billion in the same period last year. Comparable domestic store sales were 5.0 percent higher for the period. Continuing operations exclude results from selected home improvement services which Sears will no longer sell directly, and sales from Sears Business Centers, which have been sold.
Arthur C. Martinez, Sears Merchandise Group chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Our April sales reflect a recovery from March results which were hampered by storms along the East Coast. The results are gratifying because it restores our positive trend of sales increases that started last summer." Martinez said increases were reported in nearly all areas, with the strongest gains in women's and men's apparel, footwear and fine jewelry, as well as in home office equipment and various lawn and garden lines.
Automotive revenues for the period continued to be affected by Sears' recent restructuring as the focus of the business changes to batteries, tires and related services. Excluding the effects of the repositioning of the automotive business, total domestic store sales were up 8.6 percent and comparable store sales were up 7.5 percent.
For the four weeks ended May 1, Sears Merchandise Group reported gross revenues from continuing operations of $2.15 billion, 3.5 percent above the $2.07 billion in the same period of 1992. Excluded from continuing operations are gross revenues from catalog sales (except direct response) and sales from Pinstripes Petites stores, which have been closed.
For the 13 weeks ended May 1, Sears Merchandise Group reported gross revenues from continuing operations of $6.64 billion, 1.4 percent above the $6.55 billion in the same period of 1992.
