SEARS RE-OPENS HOMESTEAD STORE, TO MODERNIZE SEVEN OTHER FLORIDA STORES

HOMESTEAD, Fla., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Sears Merchandise Group today re-opened the doors of its Homestead, store, which was damaged by Hurricane Andrew, and also announced it is investing about $12.1 million to renovate seven other Florida stores in Altamonte, Bradenton, Boca Raton, Melbourne, North Clearwater, Orlando and St. Petersburg.
The rebuilding efforts of the Homestead store began last August following the devastation of Hurricane Andrew. The storm left only the structure's four concrete walls standing in its path but work was completed under budget and on schedule.
"The opening of a new store is always a happy event for a company and its employees, but today's event can truly be described as a celebration shared by Sears, our associates and our friends in the community," said Bob Moorefield, Sears district general manager. "This store is truly a symbol of the immense pride and dedication Sears associates have shown in the store and in Homestead. We have looked forward to this day for many months."
The state-wide renovation initiative is part of the five-year, $4 billion capital expenditure plan Sears announced earlier this year, in which the retailer will upgrade and re-merchandise 500 stores over the next three years. The seven Florida stores are among approximately 135 stores will begin to upgrade this year.
The focal points of the renovation program are the men's women's and children's apparel departments, which will be updated in each of the seven Florida stores and which have been completed in Homestead, to reflect Sears new emphasis on apparel merchandising. Each store's apparel assortment will be expanded by up to 30 percent. Customers will find a new department store look in Sears apparel departments with wider aisles, softer lighting, new carpeting and new merchandise display fixtures.
"We are making these changes in order to be more responsive to our customers' shopping needs and because we have a great apparel story to tell," said Moorefield. "These stores and our Florida customers are important to Sears. When the changes are completed, customers will have a more pleasant shopping experience."
Remodeling plans will vary by store and include extensive, store- wide interior renovations in the Orlando, N. Clearwater and St. Petersburg stores. In addition to updated presentations, the three stores will offer significantly more soft "lines" shopping space in bed and bath, window treatments and the apparel departments. Furniture departments in each store will be removed to create additional apparel shopping space as Homelife furniture stores in Altamonte Springs and Clearwater open later this year.
Sears Brand Central departments in Bradenton and Orlando will also be extensively renovated and expanded to offer an even broader assortment of over 80 brand name electronics and appliances like Kenmore, Sony and Whirlpool. The Orlando store will also offer an updated and expanded presentation of home improvement merchandise including lawn and garden equipment and tools including names such as Craftsman, Black & Decker and Toro.
Remodeling plans for stores in Boca Raton and Melbourne focus primarily on apparel with selling space in those departments in each store increasing dramatically. Men's, women's and children's apparel departments in the two stores will each offer 10,000 additional square feet of shopping space.
Remodeling has begun or will begin shortly at each store and should be completed by the end of the year.
The redesigned and expanded apparel departments in the eight stores will offer Sears private-label and national brand merchandise. In "The Women's Store," Sears will feature activewear, intimate apparel, career apparel, casual clothing, shoes and accessories.
"The Men's Store" offers national brands such as Arrow, Cotler, Dockers, Levi's, Lee and Pacific Trail in its sportswear, furnishings and outerwear merchandise.
"Kids & More" is the complete children's store offering a full line of children's apparel from sizes 0 to 20, infant furniture and accessories, and FunTronics shops featuring Sega and Nintendo games. Customers can find national brands such as Bugle Boy, Cotler, Dockers, Lee, Levi's, Maverick by Wrangler, OshKosh B'Gosh and Reebok along with Sears brands including Winnie-the-Pooh, McKids, Freeze Frame and Toughskins.
Sears family footwear departments offer customers popular national brands such as Converse, Florsheim, Keds, LA Gear, Reebok, and Wolverines along with Sears Trader Bay, I Love Comfort and DieHard priva te-label brands.
