 SEARS NAMES MARTINEZ TO HEAD MERCHANDISE GROUP
 CHICAGO, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Arthur C. Martinez, 52, formerly a


vice chairman of Saks Fifth Avenue, was elected chairman and chief executive officer of Sears Merchandise Group, Edward A. Brennan, chairman and chief executive officer of Sears, Roebuck and Co. (NYSE: S), announced today.
 Brennan said Martinez will be responsible for all retail, catalog and direct marketing, credit, product services, and international operations of Sears Merchandise Group, effective Sept. 1, 1992. Brennan has held these additional responsibilities since August 1990. Sears Merchandise Group had $31.4 billion in revenues in 1991 and 362,400 associates at year-end.
 "Arthur Martinez is an accomplished and distinguished executive with an extensive business background and a proven track record," Brennan said. "He brings to Sears a wealth of experience and a broad perspective which, coupled with Sears traditional strengths and core values, form the basis for a more profitable merchandise group."
 Brennan said Martinez will also be a member of the corporate management committee, which includes heads of the Allstate Insurance, Dean Witter Financial Services and Coldwell Banker Real Estate Groups of Sears.

 Martinez was named a vice chairman of Saks in 1990 and has been responsible for all of the company's administrative functions.
 From 1987 to 1990 he was senior vice president and group chief executive for the retail division of Batus, Inc. based in Louisville, Ky., and was responsible for Saks Fifth Avenue, Marshall Field's, J.B. Ivey, and Breuner's stores. He was a member of the Batus board and of the company's executive committee.
 He also served with Saks from 1980 to 1987. He was executive vice president for administration from 1984 to 1987 and senior vice president and chief financial officer from 1980 to 1984.
 Martinez was with RCA Corporation in New York City from 1970 to 1980 where he held senior positions in international and finance, including head of the international division of RCA Records from 1978 to 1980.
 He received a B.S. degree in 1960 from Polytechnic University (New York), for which he currently is a trustee, and an M.B.A. degree from Harvard University in 1965.
