SEARS NAMES COSTELLO HEAD OF MARKETING

 CHICAGO, March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- John H. Costello, 45, has been elected senior executive vice president - general manager of the marketing division for Sears Merchandise Group by the board of directors of Sears, Roebuck and Co.
 Costello, who has been president and chief operating officer of Nielsen Marketing Research, USA, in Northbrook, Ill., since 1988, will be responsible for all of Sears marketing and buying services, including advertising, effective April 1, 1993.
 Costello succeeds Matthew A. Howard, 52, senior vice president, marketing and buying services, who had previously indicated his intention to accept the early retirement incentive program and leave Sears later this year. Howard has been with Sears since 1962.
 Arthur C. Martinez, chairman and chief executive officer of Sears Merchandise Group, said, "John Costello brings to Sears an exciting and rich diversity of advertising, marketing, information, research, and consumer products experience from a number of well-respected, consumer- focused organizations. This diverse background will be essential as we shape our new strategies and marketing messages for the Merchandise Group."
 Prior to joining Nielsen, Costello was an executive vice president of the Wells, Rich, Greene, Inc. advertising agency in New York from 1986 to 1988 and senior vice president for marketing and sales at Pepsi- Cola, U.S.A., in Purchase, N.Y., from 1984 to 1986. From 1971 to 1984 he held various senior-level brand management and advertising positions with Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati.
 Costello and his wife have three children and reside in Lake Forest, Ill. He is a 1968 graduate of the University of Akronand received his MBA degree in 1970 from Michigan State University.
