SEARS JULY REVENUES RISE 17.5 PERCENT

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Sears Merchandise Group said its total domestic store sales from continuing operations for the four weeks ended July 31 were $1.81 billion, 17.5 percent above restated sales of $1.54 billion in the same period last year. Comparable domestic store sales were 15.4 percent higher for the period.
"We were pleased to continue our momentum and report another month of strong sales, which were broadly based throughout many of our merchandise lines," said Arthur C. Martinez, Sears Merchandise Group chairman and chief executive officer. "All of our apparel lines and some of our hardlines, especially tires, had very strong results. Additionally, the heat wave through much of the Midwest and South created double-digit sales of air conditioners," Martinez said.
He said that Sears is also experiencing an increase in demand for product repairs and services from customers affected by the flooding in the Midwest. "As the water levels begin to recede, our product services organization is already at work with more than 300 trained service technicians helping customers and repairing appliances and other items damaged by the floods. We also have been working with suppliers to ensure an adequate supply of parts to repair customers' water-damaged merchandise."
For the four weeks ended July 31, Sears Merchandise Group reported gross revenues from continuing operations of $2.30 billion, 12.3 percent above the $2.05 billion in the same period of 1992.
Continuing operations exclude results from selected home improvement services which Sears no longer sells directly, and results from Sears Business Centers, which have been sold. Excluded from continuing operations are gross revenues from catalog sales (except direct response) and sales from Pinstripes Petites stores, which have been closed.
For the 26 weeks ended July 31, Sears Merchandise Group reported gross revenues from continuing operations of $14.02 billion, 5.1 percent above the $13.34 billion in the same period of 1992.
