SEARS ANNOUNCES FLOOD RELIEF EFFORTS

DES MOINES, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Sears, Roebuck and Co. (NYSE: S) today announced several efforts to help Midwest residents affected by recent flooding.
"Our primary concern is for the safety and well-being of the victims of this flood, many of whom are Sears associates and customers," said Dave Shunk, Sears district general manager. "We will continue to offer company resources and local store support to assist family, friends and neighbors with relief efforts."
Sears this morning delivered a check for $150,000 as a donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund at the agency's communications center in Des Moines. Sears support to the American Red Cross, which began in 1939, includes donations totaling more than $370,000 since 1989.
In addition to the donation, Sears announced other initiatives to assist customers affected by the flood:
-- SearsCharge customers in the area who are temporarily unable to make scheduled credit payments due to the loss of earnings or the need to invest funds in emergency necessities may arrange for deferred billing. Customers may call 1-800-326-0115 for further information or credit assistance.
-- Area customers may also arrange for 0 percent financing with no payments or interest due until January 1994 on purchases made at local stores.
-- Free, potable water available at Sears stores for Sears associates in flooded areas. Water may also be made available to customers and residents as supplies are available in affected areas.
-- Sears is prepared to assign additional repair service technicians to markets in the Midwest to help homeowners assess damage to household appliances and equipment as water levels recede. Customers may call 1-800-4-REPAIR for more information. Sears repair technicians are available on a 24-hour emergency basis.
Sears stores in the Midwest, none of which has been impacted by the flood, are maintaining normal business hours and may offer extended hours of business as needed in certain markets.
