SEARS AND ITS EMPLOYEES RAISE MORE THAN $1 MILLION FOR UNITED WAY
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Sears Roebuck and Co. (NYSE: S) raised $1,043,515 for United Ways throughout the Western United States -- a 6 percent increase over last year. The funds were raised to benefit health and social service organizations in communities surrounding Sears' stores in the states of Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and New Mexico.
"At Sears Roebuck and Co. we believe in supporting the communities we are located in, and fund-raising for United Way offers us an excellent opportunity to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to the community," said Bill Lueddemann, regional systems trainer for the company, and United Way campaign coordinator. "By supporting United Way through our corporate and employee fund-raising campaigns, we are actually supporting local organizations that provide critical social services to the many communities we serve."
Sears Roebuck and Co. has run campaigns for many years according to Lueddemann, but this campaign, in which thousands of its employees participated, was especially significant because with the recession the funds raised are needed more than ever.
"We as a corporation have to put forth the effort to give back to the communities the support they have shown us in helping us become the great company we are today," explained Lueddemann. "It is important that all companies realize that they should contribute to the region they are located in through charitable efforts."
Sears Roebuck and Co. is one of the nation's largest retailers and has more than 800 stores throughout the country.
United Way organizations throughout the United States touch the lives of millions of people. In 1990, $3.1 billion was raised and distributed to health and human service agencies across the nation.
