SEARS AND CIRCUIT CITY SELECTED AS NATIONAL RETAILERS FOR DIRECTV(TM) AND RCA DSS(TM) EQUIPMENT

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- DirecTv Inc., a unit of GM Hughes Electronics and Thomson Consumer Electronics announced that they have reached retail distribution agreements with Sears Merchandising Group and Circuit City. The agreements allow approximately 800 Sears Brand Central consumer electronics departments and over 250 national Circuit City Superstores to be among the first national retail establishments to market DirecTv(TM) programming and RCA-brand DSS(TM) (Digital Satellite System) equipment beginning in spring 1994. Full nationwide availability through Sears and Circuit City is expected by the end of 1994.
As part of the commitment, Sears and Circuit City will take a prominent role in establishing the RCA DSS satellite equipment and DirecTv programming service through Sears' Brand Central Departments and Circuit City Superstores nationwide. In addition, both national retailers will provide several value-added services including fully trained sales personnel, dedicated store display space, convenient financing packages for equipment and programming, and after-sales support for the revolutionary new satellite television service.
Through DirecTv, the largest television start-up in history, every TV household across the continental United States and Canada equipped with a low-cost 18-inch satellite receiving system will have access to approximately 150 channels of pay-per-view movies, sports, popular cable services, education and information programming. The digital service will be offered to all subscribing households equipped with the RCA DSS manufactured initially by Thomson. DSS is a three-component home receiving system consisting of an 18-inch satellite antenna, a digital receiver and a remote control that will retail for approximately $700.
Consumers interested in receiving DirecTv programming will be able to purchase both the DSS hardware along with DirecTv programming packages at selected Sears Brand Central and Circuit City locations. Programming will be offered through monthly or annual subscriptions, sports season tickets or discount movie packages. In addition, DirecTv will refer consumers who call its national customer service center to their nearest selected Sears Brand Central and Circuit City Superstores for sales demonstrations.
Two high-power satellites have been manufactured by Hughes Aircraft Co. for DirecTv. Both satellites are based on the HS 601 model and each feature 16 120-watt transponders. The first satellite was successfully launched in December 1993 and the second is planned for launch in the summer of 1994.
Sears Brand Central Departments are in every multiline Sears Retail Store and are recognized for their offering of home appliances, consumer electronics and home office equipment.
Circuit City is the nation's largest specialty retailer of brand- name consumer electronics and major appliances. The company operates stores in the eastern, midwestern and western United States.
Thomson Consumer Electronics is one of the world's leading consumer electronics manufacturers. Thomson manufactures and markets the RCA, Proscan, and GE brands of color TVs, VCRs, camcorders and audio/communications products.
