SEALRIGHT SAYS PRODUCTION WILL CONTINUE AT OHIO
FLEXIBLE PACKAGING SUBSIDIARY DESPITE UNION WALKOUT
OVERLAND PARK, Kan., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Sealright Co., Inc., (NASDAQ: SRCO) said today that plant operations at its Ohio flexible packaging subsidiary are continuing with supervisory personnel as a result of a strike late Sunday night. Sealright said the union's action, coming a week before the end of the second quarter, will have minimal immediate impact on Sealright's sales and earnings.
Sealright said that unionized plant workers at Jaite Packaging, Inc., in Akron began picketing without the 72-hour advance written notice required by a no-strike contract clause. Jaite and the United Flexographic Workers, Local No. 1, have been operating under a temporary contract extension since Jan. 6.
Sealright said the strike was unexpected because of a contract clause calling for 72 hours written notice in advance of termination and because management had believed Jaite and union representatives were close to agreeing on a new contract last week. Sealright said it would not speculate on how soon the walkout might end.
Jaite Packaging is one of Sealright's two flexible packaging subsidiaries. Jaite had sales of about $42 million when it was acquired by Sealright in December 1990. Sealright had sales of $258 million in 1991.
Sealright, based in Overland Park, Kan., is North America's leading supplier of packaging and packaging systems for ice cream and other frozen dairy desserts. The company also produces paperboard and plastic packaging for food and dairy products and flexible packaging and labeling for food and beverage products, household goods, and medical supplies.
