SEA-LAND SERVICE INC. DELIVERS FIRST OF 17 CONTAINERS
OF RELIEF FOOD AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO RUSSIA
/ADVANCE/ RYBINSK, RUSSIA, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Sea-Land Service Inc. delivered the first of 17 containers of relief food and medical supplies here today, gifts from five communities in northeastern Tennessee, all sister cities of Rybinsk, which lies on the Volga River about 150 miles north of Moscow.
They were received by Andrel K. Antropov, deputy head of Rybinsk's city administration.
The containers, carrying 300 tons of supplies, were sent by the Hands of Friendship, a volunteer organization in the five Tennessee communities of King sport, Johnson City, Bristol, Erwin and Elizabethton. The Hands of Friendship was organized by local Rotary Clubs.
The Fund for Democracy and Development organized and purchased the transportation.
CSX/Sea-Land Logistics (CSL Logistics) is managing this and all the Fund's other shipments of privately donated aid supplies to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). CSL Logistics is a unit of CSX Corporation, a transportation and distribution combine.
Fourteen of the containers were loaded in Johnson City by volunteers, working with a borrowed forklift at night and on the weekend.
The other three came from Stuttgart, Ark., where they had been loaded with rice purchased by the Hands of Friendship.
Most were trucked to a CSX Intermodal facility in Nashville, Tenn., loaded aboard CSX Transportation trains, and moved to Charleston, S.C., where they were then put back on the road and driven to the Sea-Land container dock. Others, including the three from Stuttgart, were trucked directly to the port.
There they were loaded aboard a Sea-Land container ship and carried to Rotterdam and Bremerhaven. From Western Europe they were moved by Sea-Land feeder vessels to Helsinki, Finland, and St. Petersburg in Russia and then trucked by Sea-Land's Russian and Finnish agents over the highways to Rybinsk.
Sea-Land, like the railroad, the logistics company and CSX Intermodal, is a unit of CSX. It is the only U.S.-flag container line with regular service to the CIS.
The people of Rybinsk and the Tennessee communities have become sister cities in the past two years.
The five Tennessee communities have about 250,000 residents combined, about the same sized population as that of Rybinsk. Since they became sister cities, delegations from the Russian and American communities have visited one another.
The food was turned over to Antropov as a delegation of 12 people from the five Tennessee communities stood by. The group was led by Dan Schumaler of the Johnson City Rotary Club.
The gifts include a wide range of supplies, from surgical gloves and sutures to flour, canned yams and rice.
The Fund for Democracy and Development, which is providing transport for most of America's privately financed relief shipments, paid for the transportation with funding from the U.S. State Department.
The Fund for Democracy and Development, which is based in Washington, was created at the suggestion of Presidents Yeltsin and Gorbachev to serve as an umbrella organization in Mobilizing and coordinating private-sector humanitarian and development assistance from America to the people of the CIS.
The Fund and CSL Logistics are now directing the movement of more than 100 containers from all parts of America to Russia, the Ukraine and other CIS republics.
Backed by the assets of Sea-Land, CSXT and CSX Intermodal, CSX/Sea- Land Logistics provides global distribution management to a wide variety of industries and government bodies around the world.
CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX), headquartered in Richmond, Va., is an international transportation company offering a variety of rail, container-shipping, intermodal, trucking and barge services.
