SCRIPPS TO EVALUATE OPTIONS FOR UNITED MEDIA
 CINCINNATI, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The E.W. Scripps Company

(NYSE: SSP) today said it has enlisted the services of J.P. Morgan & Co. Incorporated to assist in evaluating strategic options for United Media, the company's licensing, syndication and book publishing subsidiary.
Scripps reached this decision following a comprehensive study of United Media's business units by an outside consultant. The study identified a number of options that needed to be explored, including restructuring, joint ventures or the possible sale of the various business units.
United Media, with revenues of $136 million in 1991, is a leading syndicator and licensor of news features and comic art. Its two most popular comic strips, "Peanuts" and "Garfield," each appear in more than 2,300 newspapers worldwide and their characters are licensed for thousands of product and promotional uses.
Forty-six percent of United Media's revenues last year were derived from the licensing of comic characters. Most of the remaining revenues were from the sales of syndicated comic strips and news features, and the publishing of non-fiction books and educational materials. United Media's "World Almanac and Book of Facts" is the world's best-selling single-volume reference work.
In addition to New York-based United Media, The E.W. Scripps Company operates 19 daily newspapers, 10 television stations, five radio stations and cable television systems with 652,000 basic subscribers.
