SCRIPPS NAMES PUBLISHER FOR VENTURA

CINCINNATI, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- John P. Wilcox today was named publisher of The E.W. Scripps Company's (NYSE: SSP) Ventura County, Calif., newspaper group. Since 1987 he has been business manager of the company's Stuart (Fla.) News.
Scripps, through its wholly owned subsidiary, The John P. Scripps Newspapers, operates five daily newspapers and a weekly in Ventura County, a coastal region between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles.
The company embarked on its Ventura strategy in November 1992 when it purchased the Camarillo Daily News, assumed full ownership of the daily Simi Valley Enterprise and the weekly Moorpark News Mirror, and created a new daily edition in Oxnard. By combining some marketing, production and news gathering functions with its existing newspapers, The Ventura County Star-Free Press and Thousand Oaks News Chronicle, it created a countywide newspaper group with a circulation of more than 100,000.
"John Wilcox is an outstanding newspaper manager," said William R. Burleigh, executive vice president of The E.W. Scripps Company. "He's blessed with the kind of creative insight needed for long-term success in the growing Ventura County market."
In assuming the position, Wilcox, 42, succeeds Peter La Dow, president of JPSN, who served as interim publisher in Ventura during the start-up phase.
"Our plans called for a full-time, hands-on publisher with the leadership and expertise we've found in John Wilcox," said La Dow. "He will complement the existing management and add to the pool of leadership talent in our community."
As business manager in Stuart, Wilcox saw The News emerge as Florida's fastest-growing daily publication. He oversaw modernization of the distribution and production departments in 1988, and an $8 million plant expansion in 1990. He helped implement pricing and marketing concepts that have produced significant additional revenue and gained industrywide recognition. The News has a Sunday circulation of 43,000 and weekday circulation of 35,000.
With the exception of a brief stint as personnel director at The Greensboro (N.C.) News & Record, Wilcox has been with The Stuart News the past 12 years. He joined The News -- and Scripps Howard -- as personnel manager. He later directed the production and advertising departments.
Wilcox was born in Pomona, Calif., and began his newspaper career as a teenager in the customer service department of the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post & Times. In 1971, he graduated with honors from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) with a bachelor's degree in history. He returned to FAU for graduate study in business administration, and worked in the Florida Department of Labor before joining The Stuart News.
While in Stuart, Wilcox was president of the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce, a director of the United Way and a director of the Martin Memorial Hospital Board.
The E.W. Scripps Company publishes 20 daily newspapers, operates 10 television stations, cable systems with 680,000 subscribers, and United Media, a leading syndicator and licenser of news features and comics.
