SCRIPPS INCREASES SUBSIDIARY OWNERSHIP

 CINCINNATI, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The E.W. Scripps Company (NYSE: SSP) today announced that it has increased its ownership in Scripps Howard Broadcasting Company (NASDAQ: SCRP) to 86.0 percent from 80.4 percent through the purchase of 576,680 shares of SCRP from affiliates of American Financial Corporation.
 The purchase price was $28.3 million, or $49 per share.
 Scripps Howard Broadcasting operates 10 television stations, five radio stations and cable television systems with 281,000 subscribers.
 In addition to the Scripps Howard Broadcasting stations and cable systems, The E.W. Scripps Company operates 21 daily newspapers and cable systems with an additional 390,000 subscribers. The company is also a worldwide syndicator and licensor of news features and comics.
