SCRIPPS FILES FOR STOCK OFFERING

    CINCINNATI, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The E.W. Scripps Company (NYSE: SSP) announced today that it has filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission covering a proposed public offering of 4.6 million shares (which includes over-allotment options) of Class A Common Stock owned by The Edward W. Scripps Trust, controlling shareholder of the company.  The company will not receive proceeds from the sale.
    The offering will be lead-managed by Merrill Lynch & Co. and co- managed by Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities Corp.
    The Trust currently owns approximately 68 percent of the outstanding shares of Class A Common Stock and approximately 80 percent of the outstanding shares of Common Voting Stock of the company.  The Tr}>\@has advised the company that it is selling shares of Class A Common Stock in order to diversify the TrustUs assets.
    The Class A Common Stock of the company is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SSP.
    A registration statement relating to the Class A Common Stock has been filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, but has not yet become effective.  The Class A Common Stock may not be sold nor may offers to buy be accepted prior to the time the registration statement becomes effective.
