SCRIPPS ANNOUNCES CREATION OF HOME & GARDEN TELEVISION NETWORK

CINCINNATI, Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The E.W. Scripps Company (NYSE: SSP) today said it will launch a new cable network -- The Home & Garden Television Network (HGTV) -- in the fall of 1994.
HGTV will be operated through the company's 86-percent-owned subsidiary, Scripps Howard Broadcasting Company (NASDAQ: SCRP).
"The Home & Garden Television Network will be one of the most compelling new cable services the market has seen in many years," said Lawrence A. Leser, president and chief executive officer of both The E.W. Scripps Company and its broadcasting subsidiary. "HGTV will tap that area of highest interest to today's consumers and offer unmatched opportunities for the advertisers who must reach them."
HGTV's subscriber base will be created through a unique collaboration of local television stations and cable systems. Continental Cablevision Inc., the nation's third-largest cable operator, today signed a six-year agreement to carry the new network in exchange for permission to also carry the signals of local television stations affiliated with HGTV.
"Home & Garden Television is one of the strongest new programming concepts we have seen in several years," said Rob Stengel, Continental's senior vice president for programming. "Our commitment to HGTV demonstrates a firm belief in its value to cable customers."
Scripps is discussing HGTV carriage agreements with other cable systems that carry HGTV broadcast affiliates and is expanding the HGTV affiliate group to include a broadcast station in each of the nation's television markets.
Cable systems owned by Scripps will participate in the rollout of HGTV. Together, they reach 680,000 subscribers and include the Sacramento, Calif.; Knoxville, Tenn.; and Chattanooga, Tenn., markets.
The Home & Garden Television Network will feature 24 hours of daily programming focused on that place where Americans devote most of their time and money -- the home and garden. Four of the network's primary programming areas -- home repair/remodeling, gardening, decorating and home electronics -- accounted for $200 billion in retail sales last year.
Most of the programming will be produced by HGTV and national in scope. However, local television stations affiliated with the cable network will have the opportunity for daily programming and advertising inserts.
"The Home & Garden Television Network is more than a great programming concept -- it's an opportunity for broadcast stations and cable systems to be partnered in a mutually beneficial new venture," said Frank Gardner, The E.W. Scripps Company's senior vice president for television.
Continental Cablevision, headquartered in Boston, has nearly three million subscribers in 21 states.
Seven of the Scripps television stations are members of the HGTV affiliate group: WXYZ (ABC), Detroit; WEWS (ABC), Cleveland; WMAR (NBC), Baltimore; WCPO (CBS), Cincinnati; WPTV (NBC) West Palm Beach, Fla.; KJRH (NBC), Tulsa, Okla.; and WMC (NBC), Memphis, Tenn.
The company also owns three FOX affiliates (WFTS, Tampa, Fla.; KNXV, Phoenix; and KSHB, Kansas City, Mo.), 20 daily newspapers, cable systems in 10 states, and United Media, a leading syndicator and licensor of news features and comics.
