SCOTTS TO OPEN THREE COMPOSTING OPERATIONS ASSISTS LOCAL GOVERNMENTS TO RECYCLE YARD WASTE

MARYSVILLE, Ohio, Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Scotts Company (NASDAQ: SCTT) announced today that it plans to begin operating three new facilities for providing yard waste recycling services at sites in Los Angeles; Milwaukee; and Portland, Ore.
Scotts expects these facilities, once fully operational, to generate over $3 million in additional annual revenue. Scotts has previously been awarded composting contracts in Ohio, North Carolina, Washington, Texas and Wisconsin.
In California, Scotts has been selected to provide yard waste services for the City of Los Angeles. The company is currently negotiating the final contract with the city and expects the site to become operational by the end of 1993. With the City of Milwaukee, Scotts has completed final contracts to provide yard waste composting. And in Oregon, Scotts has commenced operation at a yard waste service site in the Portland metropolitan area.
At each of these cites, Scotts will receive yard waste collected by local governments. The waste is subsequently composted and blended into the company's organic products used for lawn and garden care. The Scott's Hyponex line of organic products is the only nationally distributed line, accounting for approximately 40 percent of the total market.
The three new composting operations fit the company's long-term strategy of taking advantage of its composting expertise and the increasing concern over shrinking landfill capacity in communities across the country. "We believe composting services represents a promising growth opportunity for Scotts," said company Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tadd C. Seitz. "We are in a unique position to take waste that used to be a landfill problem and recycle it into a useful product. We have organized a business group to pursue composting services contracts with local governments and now have a number of bids pending at locations across the nation," Mr. Seitz added.
Scotts offers "turn key" composting services, including design, construction, and operation of facilities according to strict environmental guidelines. With sales of $413 million in fiscal year 1992, Scotts is the country's leading producer and marketer of consumer do-it-yourself lawn care and professional golf course turf care products. The company's Turf Builder products are the nation's most popular lawn care fertilizers and fertilizer/control combinations. The company's Hyponex potting soils are the nation's leading line of organic products, including top soils, potting soils, composted manures and bark mulches.
